Concha y Toro and Santa Rita Wineries Tour
This tour starts with a visit to one of the most
renowned vineyards of Chile, Concha y Toro, located in Pirque, south-east
from Santiago, strolling through its wine cellars, with time to
taste one of the top quality wines produced in this vineyard.
Tour Concha y Toro
Concha y Toro opens the doors of the Pirque Casona and Cellar to
everyone interested in learning more about wine and its history
in Chile. Inviting you to tour the park of the Don Melchor Concha
y Toro Casona, to visit the cellars and to taste their wines.
The visit begins at the Don Melchor square, where you will be greeted
by a bilingual guide. While viewing the panoramic vista of the Pirque
vineyard you will be invited to enjoy a glass of Trio Chardonnay
and to absorb the aromas and flavors that emerge as you visit the
centuries-old cellar.
Wine glass in hand, the visitor goes back in time as he takes a
stroll through the ancient park and views the Pirque Casona, residence
of the Concha y Toro family. This is the place where Chile’s
largest winery was founded over one hundred years ago.
At the Pirque vineyards you will be able to appreciate the wine
grapes growing and listen to a brief overview of the viticultural
and technological aspects of vineyard management that are responsible
for creating first quality wines.
Once inside the wine aging cellars, you will taste a second wine,
a Casillero del Diablo Carmenere. This variety, which arrived in
the country at the end of the 19th century, is only grown commercially
in Chile. For over a century Carmenere was mistaken for Merlot,
until it was rediscovered in the 1990s. After extensively studying
its management and the best zones for growing Carmenere, today it
is delivering extraordinary wines and has become Chile’s emblematic
grape variety.
The tour goes on to one of the Winery’s main attractions.
In the ancient cellars where founder Don Melchor Concha y Toro kept
his best wines, you will hear the “Casillero del Diablo Legend”,
a story that has made Chilean wine famous worldwide.
This
visit ends at the Wine Shop, where you enjoy a final glass of
Trio Cabernet Sauvignon.
We continue our tour visiting Santa Rita winery
Back in the XIX century, ones established the Republic of Chile,
the visionary businessman Mr. Domingo Fernandez Concha founded
this winery in 1880. The second owner of the winery was Mr. Vicente
Garcia-Huidobro, son in law of the founder, wich nobility tittle
is until now state on the levels of Santa Rita wine. Its wines
are of high quality, produced in the 2000 hectares the company
owns in the most important valleys of the country, including 700
hectares at the Maipo Valley.

Casablanca Valley
(9 hours)
Even though this valley has been “Discovered”
recently, it is already worldwide known and even compared with the
best terrains of the world. The sea air has a positive influence
creating the perfect ecologic conditions for the grapes.
Casablanca
valley is located 40 kilometers from Valparaiso and 80 kilometers
from Santiago.
This
valley was discovered as a good terrain for grapes just in 1980
by wine maker Pablo Morande, who was looking for terrains colder
than the traditional valleys assigned for premium white wines, such
as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay and also the red variety Pinot
Noir.
The
first 20 hectares were planted in 1982; the excellent results triggered
a fast expansion of the wineries in the area, reaching presently
more than 3500 hectares.

Arrival at Cusco Airport. Meeting and transfer

high altitude can cause soroche (mountain sickness). To prevent
the condition, have a few hours rest in chair and avoid alcohol,
cigarettes and heavy food. Also try a mate de coca, an infusion
of coca leaves widely available and perfectly legal in Peru.
P.M. Guided tour to the Imperial City of Cusco (the Navel
of the Earth), archeological capital of America. We begin
with the heart of the city, the Plaza de Armas (main square),
which was originally more than twice its present size. Around
it, are colonial arcades and four churches: the 17th century
baroque Cathedral with the churches of Jesus Maria and El
Triunfo at each side. We continue our tour visiting Koricancha
(Temple of the Sun), the richest temple of the Inca Empire
which shows the best Inca stonework to be seen in Cusco. After
that, we go to see the four nearby archeological sites. The
magnificent fortress of Sacsayhuamán (Satisfied Hawk),
testimony of the brilliant Inca’s engineering. The enigmatical
Qenqo (Zigzag), one of the finest examples of Inca stone carving
in situ. The small Puca Pucara (Red Fort), a kind of post-house
where travelers were lodged and goods and animals housed temporarily.
And the great Tambo Machay, a springs shrine where water flows
by a hidden channel out of the masonry wall, straight into
a little rock pool traditionally known as the Inca’s
bath.

Breakfast.
Transfer to San Pedro Railway Station to board the train to Machu
Picchu. and departure to Aguas Calientes by Train. Aguas Calientes
is a popular resting place located below Machu Picchu. The almost
four hours journey begins with a zigzag ascension before leaving
Cusco for real, and then it goes down through cultivations until
Ollantaytambo. From there, it descends by a deep gorge discovering
an excellent view of the inferior course of the Urubamba River.
A.M Arrival at Aguas Calientes Railway Station, and ascension by
bus to the entry of the Ancient Citadel of Machu Picchu (the Old
Mountain) discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. Guided visit to the
most known and most impressive archeological site of South America,
of which the archeologists have only presumptions about its function
at Inca’s time. However, considering the quality of the stonework
and the predominance of the monuments, it seems that this wonderful
place was an important ritual center deserted and forgotten by the
Incas before the Spanish conquest. Descent by bus to Aguas Calientes.
Buffet lunch at Restaurant.
P.M. Departure to Cusco by Train. After skirting the Urubamba, the
way goes up among the mountains for then going down to the town
of Cusco. At the time of the descent, we can see the superb illuminations
